OCLC provides a suite of services to assist library professionals and researchers around the world. Over the years, OCLC has expanded to offer seven main products. Because of organizational silos, OCLC was having trouble understanding relationships between products and, more importantly, how their clients were using each product.
To help OCLC understand their market, I developed a high-level overview of their products and users over the course of one summer.
I began the project by parsing through research conducted by outside consulting firms. Then I looked at user experience reports. Finally, I spoke to the product managers, who explained their product functions in greater detail.
Using my research, I narrowed user personas down to nine. These included three researcher personas, four library staff personas, and two library patron personas. I mapped out the user flows based on the decision-making processes of each user. I also developed a subway map-style graphic to show overlaps between persona choices (above).
The final deliverables for this project consisted of a printed booklet, a poster design, and an interactive map. The booklet has an executive summary, a breakdown of every product and user, and the user workflows. At the end of the summer, I presented my findings to the User Experience team and product managers I consulted along the way.
I created the interactive map for this project using Adobe XD. The map was the most crucial deliverable because I could send it to product stakeholders with a simple email. Try out the interactive map for yourself by clicking the "Next>" button below.
